 The Main Differences Between CBD And THC

The differences between CBD and THC, two of the main substances present in the cannabis plant, are in their interaction and effects within the human organism. 

Let us explain the main differences.

1. THC vs. CBD Effects

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the chemical compound in Cannabis that produces the main psychoactive effects in the human body. 

The use of products with high THC content is associated with increased dependence, cognitive deterioration and psychosis.

CBD (cannabidiol) is the chemical in cannabis that does not produce psychoactive effects; however, it does have a therapeutic effect. That is, it acts on the central nervous system, but without altering consciousness or mental activity or creating dependence. This is why CBD has medicinal properties that will bring benefits to your health.

2. Different types of the Cannabis family

The second difference between CBD and THC is its origin.

CBD is usually obtained from hemp, a form of the Cannabis sativa plant, in which it predominates over the THC content. It is precisely this difference in origin and chemical composition that gives cannabidiol its medicinal properties.

To be considered hemp, according to international regulations, the THC content cannot exceed 1%. 

THC also comes from Cannabis sativa, but from the other plant variety, marihuana.

In marihuana the THC content can reach between 25% and 30%, 

3. How CBD interacts with the organism

Another difference between CBD and THC is the way in which both substances interact with the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2).

This difference in interaction is what determines the use of CBD products for therapeutic treatments and the health benefits they offer.

CB1 receptors are mainly found in the central nervous system and are responsible for the psychoactive effect produced by cannabis.

They are found in areas related to learning processes, memory, pain, anxiety and motor coordination.

CB2 receptors are predominantly located in cells and structures of the immune system. They are responsible for the increased immune response that cannabis can have. 

THC increases the activity of both, in a much higher way for CB1.

CBD, on the other hand, has a low affinity for these two receptors. 

However, it activates multiple types of receptors, for example, serotonin (5-HT1A) receptors. By interacting with these, CBD can have anxiolytic, anti-depressive and neuroprotective effects.

It also has the potential to activate TRPV1 receptors that influence pain perception, and PPARs that may influence non-proliferation and apoptosis of certain cancer cells.
